Welcome to our Mississippi Studies classroom! Here's a snapshot of what to expect in 8th grade.

Course Goals
Our Mississippi Studies course, taught by Ms. Latoya Williams at Coleman Middle School ], explores the history, geography, culture, and civic development of Mississippi. Contact Ms. Williams at lawilliams@gpsdk12.com.
Students will use primary sources, multimedia, and projects to understand Mississippi's past and present.

What Students Will Learn
In this course, students will learn about:
- Mississippi’s physical geography and natural resources
- Native Mississippians and early European exploration
- The path from territory to statehood
- Civil War and Reconstruction in Mississippi
- Civil Rights Movement and modern Mississippi
- Local history and student-led research projects

Classroom Expectations & Key Policies
Classroom Expectations:
- Be respectful and ready to learn
- Participate actively in discussions and group work
- Complete assignments on time
- Use technology responsibly
- Ask questions and seek help when needed
Key Policies:
- Late Work: Accepted within 3 days with partial credit
- Make-Up Work: Available for excused absences
- Technology Use: Devices used only for educational purposes
- Grading: Based on classwork, projects, quizzes, and participation
Our instructional approach uses teacher-made materials, multimedia, and interactive activities aligned with Mississippi Department of Education standards. Lessons follow the Gradual Release of Responsibility (GRR) model.
